Getting to Know Dr Heliel

What is your journey into psychiatry, and what inspired you to specialise in ADHD?
I earned my MBChB from the University of Alexandria, followed by a Master's in Neuropsychiatry, and became MRCPsych in 2003. I am a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry with Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. Over the years, I developed a strong focus on ADHD, particularly in adults, through community psychiatry. Working with patients struggling with attention, focus, and comorbid conditions inspired me to specialize further in this area.
What is your philosophy or approach when it comes to treating ADHD?
My approach combines careful diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, and holistic care. I believe in listening closely to patients' experiences and tailoring management plans that address both ADHD symptoms and any co-existing conditions, while supporting long-term wellbeing.
How do you see telepsychiatry improving access to ADHD care?
Telepsychiatry removes barriers such as long waiting lists, geographic distance, and stigma. By offering flexible, accessible assessments and follow-ups, it enables patients—especially students, professionals, and those in remote areas—to access timely ADHD support that might otherwise be out of reach.
What's one thing you hope your patients feel after their first session with you?
I hope they feel listened to, understood, and reassured that there is a clear plan forward—one that gives them hope and practical steps toward improvement.
What would you like to share with your patients as you begin this journey with FasTreat?
I want my patients to know that they are not alone, and getting support doesn't have to be complicated. My goal with FasTreat is to make this journey easier, faster, and more reassuring for you.
If you could describe your approach to ADHD care in three words, what would they be?
In one sentence, what does ADHD support mean to you?
ADHD support means providing understanding, practical strategies, and encouragement to help individuals with ADHD thrive and navigate daily challenges with confidence.
