What information does a pharmacist typically check before dispensing a controlled ADHD medication?

1. The prescription is legally valid o Patient's name and address o Date of prescription o Prescriber's details and authority o Medicine, formulation and strength o Dose and directions o Total quantity, including the quantity expressed appropriately in words and figures where required 2. Appropriate prescriber authentication/signature. The prescription is within the controlled-drug time limit (28 days) 3. The medicine and dose make clinical sense The pharmacist checks the prescribed product, strength, formulation and dose, including whether a modified-release product is appropriate. This matters particularly with methylphenidate because different modified-release brands can have different release profiles. 4. Potential interactions and safety issues They may review the patient's other medicines and relevant clinical information for interactions, contraindications or concerns. ADHD treatment is also normally monitored for things such as blood pressure, pulse, weight and adverse effects, although much of this monitoring is generally undertaken by the prescriber rather than at every dispensing. 5.
